The third course-discussion of the “Hello Objectivism 2024” program was held at YSU.
During the third course-discussion, the speaker Yeranuhi Manukyan presented to the participants “Ethics. Egoism over Altruism” topic.
At the beginning of the course, the speaker gave the definitions of egoism and altruism from the Objectivist point of view. According to the ethical theory of egoism, individuals should prioritize their own selvesinterests. Altruism was defined as the ethical theory that individuals should prioritize the interests of others over their own.
Continuing the theme, it was noted that Rand’s Objectivist ethics asserts that rational self-interest is the basis of morality and advocates the pursuit of one’s own happiness as a moral imperative. Participants illustrated the contrasting ethical frameworks of egoism and altruism by writing about their interactions, pros, and cons.
